The salmon are back. Keep using water wisely.

We’ve had some rain after a very dry summer, and the familiar overcast skies are a welcome change. But even with a few days of rain, we continue to draw down the mountain reservoirs that collect and store our drinking water. Our water supply remains below normal for this time of year.

Our reservoirs are designed to supply just over a year’s worth of water for our region, and every year we count on the fall rains to start refilling them. However, after a particularly hot and dry summer like the one we just had, we need those rains to come earlier and more consistently to restore our water supply. A steady stretch of rainfall or a few big storms are key to replenishing the reservoirs.

Fall is a critical time not only for refilling our reservoirs – but also for salmon.

Using water wisely helps salmon

Adult salmon are currently swimming upstream to reach their spawning grounds in our local rivers and streams, after spending a few years out in the ocean. Every drop of water you save right now stays in our rivers and streams when salmon need it most.

Ways to use water wisely this time of year

Looking to support salmon as they’re doing the hard work this fall? Try these water-saving tips:

  • Turn off your irrigation system. Your lawn and established plants don’t need it anymore.
  • Take shorter showers and choose showers instead of baths. Showers use significantly less water.
  • Check for and fix leaks. Even small leaks can add up to a lot of unnoticed water waste.
  • Upgrade to water-efficient fixtures. Fall is a great time to replace older, inefficient fixtures like toilets which are the biggest water-user in the home (rebates are available!)
  • Sweep, don’t spray, sidewalks and driveways. Use a broom to clear debris instead of a hose.
We’re in this together

Using water wisely today helps stretch the water supply in our reservoirs, protects salmon, and ensures we will have water for future generations. Learn more about water-saving tips and available rebates.
